You cite the example of Google but even they made the transition from taking users directly into the SERP while the user was still typing the query and before they hit "Enter" signaling their intent to search for a specific thing. Also for their vertical focussed experiences like Google Flight, they do resort to more conventional experiences where the user is expected to wait for the results to load up based on their query and criteria.
